Halloween has arrived! Pamper your dog with a pumpkin treat

If the videos of pets dressed as Chucky, Batman or ghosts on the internet taught us anything, it is that Halloween is no longer just a matter for children, but also for dogs. And the truth is that we love it. Are you planning to carve a pumpkin ? Don't forget your pet: it is a very beneficial food for canines , which can be used to cook treats for them.

In this article we explain how to prepare a healthy treat that is very easy to make. Read more to discover how to pamper your dog during this special time.

ingredients for the pumpkin dog treat recipe

The recipe

Ingredients (for 10-12 treats)

⅓ cup natural or canned pumpkin puree

1 cup oat powder

1 small spoon of cinnamon

1 large spoon of melted coconut oil

1 tablespoon peanut butter (optional)

Preparation

For the pumpkin puree : preheat your oven to 200°C. Cut your pumpkin into quarters and place them on a platter or tray lined with parchment paper. It has to be cooked for 40-45 minutes, until the meat is soft.

Tips: if your oven only heats from the bottom, you can add a cup of water to the pan and/or cover the pumpkin pieces with aluminum foil.

As soon as the squash is cooked, let it cool, then remove the skin and put the flesh in a blender. Add a little water to achieve a creamy texture if necessary.

The prizes: mix all the ingredients in a bowl with a spoon. Form balls with your hands. To adjust the consistency, add water or oats. They are ready now!

The ingredients and their benefits

Offering human food to our pets can be a source of concern. Lists of prohibited or beneficial foods contradict each other. We consulted several scientific studies to make sure each ingredient was good for them. (In fact, what is consumed in moderation is rarely harmful.) But if you're not convinced, don't hesitate to adapt our recipe.

  • Pumpkin: source of vitamin C, helps strengthen the immune system. Contains folic acid that counteracts anemia in dogs. If you use canned pumpkin puree, make sure it has no added ingredients, such as sugar or preservatives.
  • Coconut oil: Coconut has lauric acid that helps fight bacteria and viruses. It is suitable for dogs.
  • Cinnamon: they like the flavor and it has nutritional benefits (antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties), especially for heart health .
  • Oatmeal: it is rich in minerals (zinc, iron, manganese, biotin) and vitamins B5 and B9, responsible for the good condition of hair. It also helps regulate digestion.
  • Peanut butter: excellent source of protein for dogs, with vitamins and healthy fats. It is important to check that it does not have added ingredients, in particular xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
